In the late summer of 1913, William Elbert Moore (1889-1977) and Fred Burwell Sieger (1889-1968) made a publicized 900-mile 20-day motorcycle journey from Helena to Spokane and back. They are pictured here near Moise, Montana, at the National Bison Range, on their way to Spokane. Although it is hard to be sure, I believe Moore is on the left, Sieger on the right.
If you look closely, you can see the camera shutter-tripping string leading from Sieger to the camera, which was on a tripod.
The lads left from the Commercial Club, which was in the Kohrs Block on Fuller Avenue.
William Miller recounted the journey in the Independent Record in 1963, which can be seen below.
Both Moore and Sieger suffered motorcycle-related injuries in the years following their trip. |
