John Crittenden Major
1831-1920

KENNON BAIRD COLLECTION

A narive of Indiana, John C. Major distinguished himself during the Civil War as Colonel of the 43rd Indiana Infantry before coming west to Montana.

In Helena, he served as Street Commissioner, was active in Masonic organizations and in the Grand Army of the Republic. His obituary, seen below, states trhat Major was also Chief of Police in Helena, but I find no mention of that in the newspaper archives.

He is buried in Bagdad, Kentucky.
