The Pet and Doll Parade (also called the Kiddie Parade and Children's Parade) was held from 1956 to 1959, and was sponsored by the Harold Joyce Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Like the Vigilante Parade, there were entry categories and prizes.
The top photo shows Gary Guettler dressed as Captain Hook, piloting his ship down Last Chance Gulch. Gary's entry won first prize in the vehicles division.
The second photo highlights Ginger Ann Guettler as Little Bo Peep, with her sheep. She was the winner of the pet division.
The last photo shows unidenfied children pushing baby strollers. The couple are both wearing blackface, which was a widely-accepted form of dress-up at the time.
The Independent Record reported that the total prize purse for the 1957 parade was $900, which translates to about $8,800 in 2021 dollars. |
